Abstrakt
This article focuses on intercultural competencies, which can be identifi ed during reading comprehension activities and in the subsequent process of speaking on a given topic, as a part of second-language learning. During the process of interpreting a text in a foreign language, attention is focused on cognitive and affective competencies, in particular the student’s ability to find and characterize the emotional aspect of the statement. Storytelling (re-telling of material) used in the teaching of a foreign language demonstrates that both cognitive and affective components are an essential part of intercultural competence in language education, because they strengthen grammatical and stylistic abilities as well as the ability to think critically and to choose appropriate language tools in specific situations, i.e. ‘cultured’ and ‘culturally correct’ speech. Th e use of literary texts from different historical periods, including contemporary literature, plays an extremely important role in language education and cultural transfer.
